COVER STORY: POLITICAL TURMOIL IN RAJASTHAN

A lot has happened in the state of Rajasthan since July 11 when the Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot had claimed that Bharatiya Janata Party is making nine-digit offers to his MLAs in a bid to topple the Government. On August 14, Chief Minister Gehlot-led Congress Government in Rajasthan won the vote of confidence in the state legislative assembly. The trust vote came after a month long political menace in Rajasthan which erupted with the rebellion by the former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot and 18 other Congress MLAs.

After the end of trust vote in the assembly, Former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot said that the vote of confidence was passed with a very good majority. He also said that “despite various attempts by the opposition party i.e. BJP, the result is in favour of the Government. This has put a full stop on all the suspicions that were arising.” Rajasthan Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal had moved a motion of confidence in the legislative assembly. Initiating the debate on the motion in the assembly, Dhariwal blamed the centre for trying to topple the Governments in the states of Manipur, Madhya Pradesh and Goa using money and power. He added that ‘a similar attempt in Rajasthan would not succeed.’ After the trust vote CM of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot said that his win will serve as a message to the forces which are trying to destabilize elected Government in the Country. He also said that ‘their every tactic failed in the state of Rajasthan. It is the people’s unwavering trust in us and unity of our congress MLAs that has brought this victory.’

On 14th July 2020, Former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot was removed from the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan and the President of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee. Two more MLAs were also removed from the post of ministers. Sachin Pilot was also sent a notice by the speaker of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, C.P Joshi about the dissolution of his membership from the assembly. That time, Rajasthan BJP President SatishPoonia slammed Indian National Congress and CM Ashok Gehlot for not choosing a young leader as Chief Minister of the state. He also said that if Sachin Pilot wants to join BJP then the door is always open him. BJP also demanded floor test in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly to prove their majority. After a month long drama in the state, on 13th August Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot met his former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot in Jaipur. Gehlot announced after meeting in the CM’s house that the Congress Government would move a confidence motion and seek a trust vote on the floor of the House. AICC General Secretary Mr Venugopal told to reporters after the meeting that Congress is united and would fight against the BJP’s divisive politics. Ashok Gehlot tweeted that the misunderstanding that had occurred in the party in the last one month needed to be forgiven and forgotten in the interst of the country, state and the people and in the interest of democracy. The trust vote took place a day after Sachin pilot attended the Congress legislature party meeting at Chief Minister Gehlot house. He declared that he is determined to act in the interest of the people of the state of Rajasthan and in accordance with the promises made. During the debate in the assembly, both CM and Sachin Pilot had presented a united front and attacked the opposition party BJP for its alleged role in a conspiracy to the topple the Government.

Rajasthan High Court was to deliver its verdict on the petition filed by BJP MLA MadanDilawar and the BahujanSamaj Party challenging the merger of six BSP MLAs in Congress Party on Monday but the same has been postponed. High Court has suspended its work for 3 days starting from 17th Aug to 19th Aug. The Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court IndrajeetMohanty has tested Coronavirus positive. The merger of BSP MLAs in the Congress is a boost for Congress as the tally of congress has increased to 107 in the House of 200. After these all political crisis one thing can be construed that Ashok Gehlot proved that he is indispensable for the Congress in Rajasthan and he still has enough power to take on rivals both inside and outside the party.
