In the heart of Madhya Pradesh, where the ancient city of Ujjain once served as the capital of great rulers, a modern leader has ignited the flame of cultural renaissance. Dr. Mohan Yadav, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, has emerged as an enthusiastic guardian of India’s civilizational pride. He is actively engaged in reviving the immortal legacy of Emperor Vikramaditya. Symbolically and poetically, he is often seen as the “revival” or reincarnation of the great emperor. Yadav’s initiatives blend historical glory, good governance, and cultural nationalism, reflecting the golden image of the Vikramaditya era associated with justice, valor, and wisdom.

Emperor Vikramaditya, the symbolic ruler of Ujjain (linked to the Gupta period or mythological tales), is an icon of unparalleled administration, courage, and compassion. His court was a center of knowledge, where scholars like Kalidasa flourished. His rule established the ideal of dharma-based governance. Stories of the Navaratnas (Nine Gems), impartial justice, and victory over invaders have inspired generations. Dr. Mohan Yadav hails from the Ujjain South Assembly constituency and shares a deep connection with this heritage. Before his full-time entry into politics, he was actively involved in plays based on Vikramaditya and has even portrayed the role of the emperor’s father, Gandharvasena. This early association is shaping his governance today.
After assuming the Chief Minister’s office in December 2023, Dr. Yadav has systematically incorporated the ideals of Vikramaditya into contemporary governance. One of his key initiatives is the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock. Launched in Bhopal along with a mobile app, this innovation connects the traditional Hindu Panchang (calendar) with modern technology and symbolizes the harmony between ancient Indian science and the contemporary world. Yadav describes it as a means to restore the tradition of timekeeping initiated by Vikramaditya. He presented a grand version of this clock at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, thereby strengthening cultural unity between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
The most visible form of this revival is the grand theatrical production “Samrat Vikramaditya Mahanatya”. Staged in April 2025 at Delhi’s historic Red Fort with over 250 artists, this play brings to life the saga of the emperor’s bravery, statesmanship, and justice. Yadav emphasized that this presentation delivers a message of relevant good governance even after 2000 years. Later, the Mahanatya reached Varanasi, where thousands of spectators applauded it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised this effort. Dr. Yadav repeatedly states that the compassionate and courageous rule of Vikramaditya is a source of inspiration for building a developed India today. The 139-day Vikramotsav 2026 has been another significant and highly successful step in this direction, gaining international recognition.
The establishment of the Vikramaditya Research Centre (Vikramaditya Shodh Peeth) is a historic and important step for ensuring the continuity and smooth functioning of these activities. Currently, the responsibility of this centre has been entrusted to Shri Ram Tiwari, an experienced and expert personality in cultural and historical subjects. His role has been remarkable in realizing the vision and concept of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. Carrying out the duties and implementation as the Chief Minister’s Cultural Secretary is a historic achievement.
Beyond theatre, practical steps also strengthen this vision. The Madhya Pradesh government has instituted the Samrat Vikramaditya International Award, carrying a prize money of ₹1.01 crore. This award honors contributions in the fields of good governance, culture, and public service. The Vikramotsav program celebrates the Vikram Samvat calendar, in which Yadav stresses that the ideals of the emperor’s justice and harmony remain relevant in modern administration. He connects democratic values to ancient Indian roots and says that both Lord Krishna and Vikramaditya prioritized merit-based governance over hereditary rule.
Critics may call this cultural myth-making, but for Yadav and the millions inspired by Sanatan tradition, it is a confident reclamation of history. Ujjain is being developed as a heritage tourism and knowledge hub. Projects like the Vikramaditya Heritage Hotel are blending AI-driven modernity with traditional hospitality.
Dr. Mohan Yadav’s efforts go far beyond symbolism—they actualize a philosophy in which the past illuminates the future. In an era of rapid change, the virtues of Vikramaditya—courage in adversity, generosity in governance, and wisdom in justice—provide a moral compass. Just as the grand play echoes from the Red Fort to Kashi, this is not mere memory but a living legacy. Under Dr. Mohan Yadav’s leadership, the revival of Vikramaditya reminds India that the stream of its civilization flows continuously like the Ganga, nurturing a strong and culturally rooted nation.
